MYTH: SPEAKING OUT ABOUT CONFLICT AND BULLYING MAKES IT WORSE!

FACT: RESEARCH SHOWS THAT  CONFLICTS AND BULLYING WILL STOP WHEN

PEOPLE SPEAK OUT AND NAME IT

 

Myth: Bullying is just a stage, a normal part of  life. I went through it, my kids will too. ”
Fact:
Bullying is not “normal” or socially acceptable behaviour. We give bullies power by our acceptance of this behaviour.

Myth: If I tell someone, it will just make it worse.”
Fact:
Research shows that bullying will stop when adults in authority and peers get involved.

Myth: Just stand up for yourself and hit them back”
Fact:
While there are some times when people can be forced to defend themselves, hitting back usually makes the bullying worse and increases the risk for serious physical harm.

Myth: Bullying is a school problem, the teachers should handle it.”
Fact:
Bullying is a broader social problem that often happens outside of schools, on the street, at shopping centers, the local pool, summer camp and in the adult workplace.”

Myth: People are born bullies.”
Fact:
Bullying is a learned behaviour and behaviours can be changed.

Myth: Bullying doesn’t take place in the work place. Only children bully.
Fact:
Bullying happens everywhere. At work, at home, at school. Adults can bully as much as young people. Bullying at work can also include, sexual harassment and assault.

Myth: Bystanders are not responsible for someone being bullied.
Fact:
Bystanders are responsible. Instead of just looking on and not doing anything they could tell another person, if there is more than one bystander they could step in and help. If an adult sees a child being bullied they have a responsibility to protect that child.

Myth: Bystanders can not be arrested.
Fact
: Bystanders who upload acts of bullying on the internet, are at risk of a criminal record. Bystanders who encourage a fight and watch a person be beaten, are also at risk of a criminal record.
